The EU milk quota system is being abolished in 2015. After that, it will be up to farmers themselves to decide how much they can produce depending on their own situation: labour, manure quota, housing size, financial status and roughage production in relation to mineral use. Producing roughage will become more important. At the moment, achieving higher roughage production on your own land is key due to the high costs of concentrates. In many cases, it even pays to increase the proportion of roughage at the expense of milk production.
