Barforma is a new late diploid variety from Barenbrug. This variety has been adopted on the German ‘BSA-Sortenliste’ since 2010 with excellent notes for yield, persistency and sward density. Barforma is a unique variety for Germany, as it shows a typical growth curve with outstanding yields later in the season. Using Barforma in a mixture with another high spring yielding variety, like Barpasto, will give a prolonged production period and more yield in total.

Prolonged growth curve

Comparing to the usual perennial ryegrass varieties, the growth curve from Barforma can be described as a gradual start with a boost during summer until into late autumn. This special growth curve leads to more flexibility for farmers who want a constant high production through the whole year. Besides that, for grazing farms Barforma allows more intensive grazing and a constant high milk production. This has been confirmed by the official grazing trials in The Netherlands, where Barforma was rated as no.1 variety under grazing.

Easy to manage

The plant characteristics of Barforma make this crop easy to manage for the farmer. It has a good winterhardiness and excellent resistance against diseases, especially crown rust. The high sward density avoids infection with weeds and bad grass species, like Poa trivialis. This leads to a long lasting persistency, even under tough conditions (see table 1).

Lolium perenne

One of the most important and widely used forage grasses, exhibiting rapid establishment, good tillering ability, excellent response to nitrogen and high acceptability to stock. Compared with other species, perennial ryegrass is more digestible, thus giving higher digestible dry matter production.
