Descampsia caespitosa is a very persistent perennial species which comes from wet grasslands. The specie shows an aggressive growth habit and is able to build up a dense sward within a short time. tufted hairgrass has proven to be tolerant to shade combined with heavy wear. Moreover, top variety Barcampsia has the beneficial characteristic to green up very early after winter. Apart from its excellent performance in shade it can also be used for full sun purposes while maintaining an excellent aesthetic appearance. The leaves are very hard due to a high silicon content in the leaves. Therefore, for cutting tufted hairgrass a sharp (lawn) mower is needed.
