Lawn creation - sowing

What is the desired sowing depth? [Top]

Rule of thumb: use twice the seed length. In practice, this is between 0.5-1 cm depth.

What is the quantity to sow? [Top]

This depends on the mixture. See the instructions on the pack.

What is a seed bed? [Top]

A seedbed is a well-prepared top layer of soil where the grass seeds have good contact with the soil. A good seed bed is smooth, and free of weeds, stones, wood or other impurities. The soil should not be too compacted, but it should be firm enough so that deep ruts are not formed when mowing. The uppermost layer can be raked, creating a fine top layer. The grass seeds can be raked into this top layer, which gives them a good basis for germination.

Is the seed quantity the same with hydroseeding as with the regular sowing method? [Top]

Yes

Why are no blades of grass visible after 14 days? [Top]

There are 5 influencing factors.

  1. Good coverage of the grass seed: sowing depth = twice the grass seed length.
  2. Good contact between soil and grass seed.
  3. Sufficient moisture, but not too wet.
  4. Temperature: some seeds only germinate at a minimum soil temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.
  5. Light: some grass seeds are ‘light germinators’ and need sunlight to germinate.

If all conditions are optimal, it takes between 5 and 20 days for grass seed to germinate.

How should I sow? [Top]

Sowing can be done by hand or with a seed drill. Weigh out the right amount of grass seed according to the instructions on the pack. Sowing by hand requires a certain skill. Always make sure the grass seed is evenly distributed on the ground. Preferably sow when there is no wind. It may help to use a lawn spreader. It can also be used to distribute fertiliser properly. Make sure the spreading settings are correct. Weigh out half the grass seed required. Walk/drive up and down row by row (spreading width). The second half of the seed is distributed in the same way with a different travel direction (for example crosswise).

When will the first blade of grass appear after seeding?

Should I add compost before seeding? [Top]

No, this is not necessary. It is better to choose a grass mixture that will do well with the existing soil. Make sure you sow according to the instructions, make a good fertilisation plan and irrigate in time.
