Charles is a new NZ-bred variety, named after Sir Bob Charles, the first left-handed golfer to win a major. Like Sir Bob, it breaks new ground, being ranked #1 by a clear half-point in Turfgrass Seed 2018 Table G1 (see Figure 1)! Its scores for visual merit and shoot density promise to have a major impact as part of a species exchange programme, improving golf greens and out-competing the ubiquitous Poa annua.

Browntop bentgrass is the best partner for red fescues on golf greens. The species has a tufted growth habit, but forms a dense sward. It has a moderate susceptibility to diseases like fusarium and dollar spot and it tolerates mowing levels between 4 and 5 mm.
